and executive roles. Tim has a BSc. in Marine Biology from
Flinders University, an MBA from Bond University and he remains
a fully-certified submersible engineer, ROV pilot and commercial

Gary Shanahan is currently Deputy Director of the Severn Tidal Power Unit within the Department of Energy and Climate Change. Gary joined the Department of Trade and Industry in 1989 as a chemistry graduate after studies at the University of Salford and the Ecole Superieure de Chimie Industrielle de Lyon (France). His first position within DTI was as a research scientist, but following a secondment to the European Commission in 1992 he moved into research programme management and technology transfer. Within the Department, and its successors, he has covered a number of areas relating to industry sponsorship and related policy. Gary moved to the Energy Group in 1999 and has been extensively involved in policy development and formulation in the renewables area since - particularly in the wave and tidal areas where in his previous post he was responsible for the development of the Marine Renewables Deployment Fund. |

Trevor Raggatt joined the Energy Innovation Unit in the, then, Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) in January 2008. He leads on policy relating to bioenergy and marine energy technology (including oversight of the Marine Renewables Deployment Fund). As part of this role he was the UK Executive Committee member for the IEA implementing agreements on Bioenergy and Ocean Energy Systems. With the creation of the Department of Energy and Climate Change in September that year his portfolio changed to comprise broader energy innovation policy responsibilities alongside his lead on marine energy.
He joined the Department of Trade and Industry in 1990 after gaining a BSc(Hons) in Chemistry at Royal Holloway College (University of London) and research work in conjunction with the College and BP - initially working on both policy and the development of ultra-pure reference materials at the Laboratory of the Government Chemist in Teddington. He moved to DTI headquarters in London in 1992 and, in the course of his career, has worked on a diverse range of policy topics including National Measurement Standards, UK civil space policy, Rescue and Reconstruction of the Lloyds of London insurance market, UK & International Reporting and Accounting Standards, the UK’s major reviews of Company & Partnership Law and, latterly, State aid (leading, amongst other things, on aid for environmental protection). |

John has 32 years experience in the energy industries. He initially spent 12 years in oil & gas business, working in the North Sea, S E Asia, South America and the USA. He has since spent 20 years as a consultant to organisations including government agencies in five countries, the European Commission’s Energy Directorate and the Office of his Highness the President of The UAE. Work on strategies relating to the energy sectors includes renewable energy, oil & gas, conventional and nuclear power generation, and energy trading. |

Thomas
Royle was born in Lancaster, England in 1953 and studied Engineering
at Loughborough University of Technology.Thomas has been involved
with the design and test of military vehicles, gas turbines,
heavy process packaged plant and machinery and offshore engineering
amongst many other things. He first became involved in the
composites industry in 1990 when he was employed by British
Gas Exploration and Production, having responsibility for
protecting 13 offshore gas production platforms against fires
and explosions. His experience gained from extensive
testing of composite materials for the offshore market led
him to join SP Systems in 1993 and to form his own company
SP Offshore Composites in 1996.
Since then, Thomas
has been involved in the promotion of the application of composites
into architecture and the construction industry, re-joining
SP [soon afterwards to become Gurit] in 2002. Amongst
his many other roles, Tom looked after the Prototyping function
at Gurit and provided support to architects, structural engineers
and prime contractors on projects where composites were being
considered. Tom is now Head of Gurit Strategic Business Development
focusing on the Ocean Energy market. |
Jochen Bard

As head of energy conversion in the Energy Conversion and Control Engineering division of the Institute for Solar Energy Supply Technology (ISET), Kassel, Germany, he is responsible for the areas hydropower and ocean energy systems as well as hydrogen and fuel cell technologies since the year 2000. He is Vice Chairman and German alternate member in the Executive Committee of the IEA Implementing Agreement on Ocean Energy Systems (IEA-OES) and member of the German mirror group of the technical committee TC 114, Marine Energy – Wave and Tidal Energy Converters of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). As R&D project leader for technology development he currently works in ocean energy technologies such as marine current turbines and wave energy devices for full scale pilot and demonstration projects mainly in Europe with a focus on modeling of waves and currents and of device performance, power take-off technologies and control engineering. More generic work includes new methods for resource assessments, standardization activities, contributions to research networks and development of scenarios for the development of ocean energy technologies e.g. for the European Commission.
He lectures in Bachelor and Master Courses in renewable energies at the university. From 2006 to 2007 he worked as research analyst for the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU). |

Martin is one of the founders of Marine Current Turbines Limited and joined the company full-time in February 2002. He has an M.A. (Hons) in Economics form Edinburgh, and an M.Eng in Petroleum Engineering form Heriot-Watt. He started his career as a Seaman Officer in the Royal Navy where he completed a short service commission serving in a variety of ships culminating an appointment as Executive Officer of a Minehunter. Prior to joining MCT he worked for nine years as a Venture Capitalist with Murray Johnstone Limited, and then latterly with Northern Venture Managers Limited where he was responsible for starting and developing NVM’s business in the South of England.
Martin has corporate finance skills and commercial experience spanning a wide breath of industries developed whilst working as a venture capitalist, and as a director of investee companies. In particular he is very familiar with the issues involved in early stage technology companies. Renewable Energy had been a particular interest for a number of years prior to becoming involved with Marine Current Turbines. The technology, environment and stage of the company represented a natural fit for his background and experience. |

Peter Fraenkel is Technical Director (and a founder) of Marine Current Turbines Ltd., a company pioneering the development of tidal stream technology. He is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and a Fellow of both the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and of the Energy Institute. He started his career in aircraft manufacturing before moving to the mining and metallurgical industries. He worked on renewable energy technologies from the mid-1970s and was also involved in a number of R&D programmes covering small-hydro-power, wind-power and small Stirling cycle power plants and for the last fifteen years, tidal stream technology. |
Richard Parkinson

Parkinson is a Master Mariner and progressed rapidly to command
of HHP Anchor Handling/ Towing Vessels in the northern North
Sea involved in rig moves, including the early deepwater drilling
activity west of Shetland.Subsequently, he moved to offshore
construction as Project Superintendent/ Project Manager progressing
to Offshore Area Manager on sub sea and topside offshore construction
including SBM/ FPSO installation, pipeline repairs, sub sea
jacket repairs and heavy-lift/construction, operating a fleet
of construction barges and support vessels in West Africa.
He later moved to the Middle East
as a Marine Consultant with Noble Denton and subsequently
as General Manager for the Lamnalco Group managing offshore
oil terminals.In 2004, Richard acquired Mojo Maritime Ltd
and has grown and developed the business to provide Marine
Operations and Installation Expertise to the emerging offshore
renewable energy sector. Richard has been at the forefront
of several of the company's high profile wind, wave and tidal
projects. |

Dr. Graham Salvidge

Dr Savidge graduated in Physical Oceanography and Marine Biology from the University of Wales. His earlier research focussed on biological oceanography for which he participated in or led several oceanographic cruises. More recently he has been involved in both applied macroalgal research and investigating the effects of physical forces on kelp plants in addition to developing programmes to consider the environmental consequences of tidal and wave energy extraction systems. He is an active partner in the UK SuperGen 2 Project and has been closely involved in the development of the environmental monitoring programme for the SeaGen Tidal Turbine recently deployed in the Strangford Narrows, Northern Ireland. |
