At
the 3rd Annual Tidal Energy Conference, VerdErg
will announce the launch of VerdErg Renewable Energy Ltd.
and unveil details of the Spectral Marine Energy Converter.
VerdErg has over
30 years of experience in the development, supply and installation
supervision of innovative offshore technologies for the energy
industry. Because of our 15 years of continuous deepwater
activity in the hostile environment West of Shetlands, we
are recognised as specialists in deploying subsea hardware
that is effective, robust and rapidly installed.
VerdErg has completed
the first phase of the development of a patented Tidal Energy
machine called SMEC that promises renewable electricity directly
competitive with Fossil Fuel at around 2p per Kilowatt Hour.
SMEC converts Potential Energy in the Tidal Flow to electricity
and therefore operates beyond the “Betz Limit”
which constrains the output of Kinetic Energy flow converters.
The Carbon Trust has commissioned W S Atkins to audit VerdErg’s
claims that a Gigawatt-scale SMEC can be commissioned for
a capital cost significantly less than £1m per MW installed
capacity.
Reliability, Installability
and Maintainability were prioritised in the design of SMEC
by using proven offshore technologies and minimising moving
parts subsea. This ensures SMEC will generate electricity
with high system availability.

ABB
is globally committed to developing environmentally friendly
energy solutions using renewable resources and is a strong
partner to marine energy projects.
ABB supports device
developers and system integrators by supplying practical,
proven products such as induction or permanent magnet synchronous
generators, power frequency converters, transformers, switchboards
and controllers for local supervisory and remote monitoring.
In addition, ABB can take responsibility for the grid connection
and interface engineering and containerisation of all the
equipment.
Custom-built ABB
generators are key components on devices for renewable power
generation, as fitted in the world’s first commercial
wave farm, a 2.25MW installation off the coast of northern
Portugal or as installed on the 300 kW Hammerfest Strøm
tidal turbine in Norway.
ABB's application specific power converters
perform an efficient variable speed operation and a compliant
grid interface. Subsea off-shore interconnection of several
kilometres between generator and converters are possible with
medium voltage system. |

Aquascientific
was formed in 2006 by Dr Adrian Janssen and Prof Michael Belmont.
The company is developing a highly efficient, variable
aspect tidal turbine primarily for estuarine and
river energy extraction. The design benefits from a fundamental
robustness, being highly efficient at lower flow
speeds and its low speed high torque operation is designed
to avoid issues with marine life.
After winning two highly competitive
grant awards totaling £300,000 from the DTI and the
prestigious Royal Society, the team have developed 3 prototypes
at the University of Exeter's marine dynamics department.
The first sea going prototype (15KW) is due to best tested
in the Exe estuary in Devon during Summer 2009. After
testing of the Exe Estuary prototype, Aquascientific hopes
to advance talks with industrial partners and investors and
begin designing their commercial demonstrator. Aquascientific
have also recently been asked to submit a proposal for low
environmental impact alternative to the severn barrage. |

The Pentland Firth Project,
the successful Regional Initiative for wave and tidal developments
in the Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters, supports marine energy
developers in their quest to perfect commercial scale schemes.
Work on sites in the region is expected to start in 2010,
following the award of seabed leases by The Crown Estate later
on this year. Highlands & Islands Enterprise, The Crown
Estate and The Scottish Government are working together to
develop the industry, bringing jobs to the local area and
making a significant contribution to renewables targets.
Our goal is to meet companies, research organisations and
investors with an interest in marine renewable energy. As
well as looking for synergies with the local supply chain
which includes a significant capability in engineering design
and fabrication, environmental consultancy and other support
services, we are keen to meet high energy users with an interest
in data centres, energy storage and other related fields. |

SABELLA is a pioneering and persevering project under development for nearly 10 years. The SABELLA Company derived from a consortium integrating complementary expertises of its partners to develop a dedicated turbine technology to harness tidal hydrokinetic energy. The Company human asset is composed of the top specialists in the field of marine energies, and receives the support from 5 industrial groups specialised in subsea construction, offshore works, renewable energies, marine environment, and electrical facilities (SOFRESID ENGINNERING, SAIPEM, HYDROHELIX ENERGIES, INVIVO ENVIRONMENT and DOURMAP).
In 2008, the Company successfully developed "SABELLA D03", an initial 10 to 80 kW tidal stream turbine prototype (scale 1/3) which was immersed and tested in Bénodet, Brittany (France). This project is a key reference as it was the first underwater tidal current powered turbine in France.
Based on this "D03" experience feedback, the SABELLA active team is working towards an industrial and commercial solution, and had launched the "SABELLA D10" program, full-size pre-industrial tidal turbine, 200 to 300 kW of power, which is planned to be tested in situ in 2011. |
