Company Overview |
| Voith sets standards in the markets energy, oil & gas, paper, raw materials and transport & automotive. With more than 40 000 employees and locations in over 50 countries of the world, Voith is one of the large family-owned companies in Europe.
Voith Hydro Ocean Current Technologies (VHOCT), Heidenheim, is a Center of Competence for the development of ocean current power stations (tidal and permanent currents).
The kinetic energy from ocean currents is transformed into electrical power using free-flowing, three-bladed horizontal axis turbines.
Because of their similar physical properties, sea current turbines are like wind power turbines. However, since water as their driving medium has a mass density 800 times higher than air, they are equipped with much shorter rotor blades.
In order to meet the special requirements regarding installation and maintenance, the tidal current turbine from Voith differs significantly from a wind turbine in terms of its interior. The system is particularly simple, sturdy and low-maintenance. A deliberate effort was made to avoid using any high-maintenance elements, such as blade angle adjustment, current tracking, gears, dynamic seals, electrical simulation and lubrication of the bearings, etc.
For applications in tidal currents, where the direction of flow is changed every six hours, rotor blades are used which operate from both sides. Thus, the turbine changes the direction of rotation at each tidal change.
In summer 2012 VHOCT has successfully completed the test of its 1:3 scale prototype in Jindo, Korea and is currently assembling a 1 MW commercial size demonstrator for installation at the European Marine Energy Center in Orkney, Scotland. |

Company Overview |
TidalStream is developing the ‘Triton’ platform technology - a semi-submerged turbine-carrying catamaran structure secured to a seabed anchorage by a rigid swing-arm tether which can be towed to site already assembled, then deployed into its operating position by water ballasting. De-ballasting will bring the system to the surface when required for maintenance or repair.
Various versions of Triton are being developed from a 3MW capacity mid-depth version to a deeper water system which can accommodate turbines of up to 10MW from a single installation.
The Triton concept is adaptable and can accommodate turbines provided by different developers. |

Company Overview |
| enviroSeel designs and manufactures high integrity cable harnesses for hazardous environments. Dual jacket sealing assures reliability - fit and forget.
Thermoplastic hot injection processes ensure complete amalgamation with the cable jackets. Applications using heat-shrink or thermoset polyurethane have much lower sealing integrity and robustness.
Thermal energy maximises the bond strength between the moulding and the connector back shell.
We continuously develop new techniques that offer innovative solutions including ‘Linear Seal’. This can be incorporated with any cable jacket and can be combined with moulded terminations to double the sealing integrity.
20 years’ experience - 100% reliability record having had no reported failures in the field. |
